Most offer a mixture of dormitories, double, twin and single rooms. Some rooms may include linen; otherwise this can be hired. Some rooms may also have TVs, fridges, tea and coffee and storage facilities.

Holiday parks are equipped to please a wide range of people for a minimal cost. Within an attractive landscaped setting (often near a beach or lake), they provide sites for tents, caravans and campervans. It is important to note that camping is only permitted in designated areas. There are no wastewater/sewage pump out facilities on the island, those using mobile homes must ensure waste is disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites are usually quite basic, offering 'back to nature' style accommodation and facilities. The Department of Conservation (DOC) operates six campsites on Great Barrier Island, all near the coast. Each offers basic facilities with all having toilets and a water supply. Great Barrier Island has a couple of other holiday parks/campgrounds including Mikeys Place and Sugarloaf Campground.
Mikeys Place is a large camping ground set on a farm, surrounded by mature trees. Facilities include hot showers, toilets, a cook house and wet weather shelter.
