Great Barrier Island offers impressive mountain bike riding for all levels and is an adventurous way to see much of the island. Some sections of the road between the main areas are sealed, but most are gravel and are used by other vehicles.
This would probably be considered off-road cycling to most people. There are some challenging drop offs and steep hill sections and care should be taken, especially during the busy holiday season.
Airlines and ferries will carry bikes to the island along with your luggage. Island buses will also carry your bike for a small fee.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) has designated mountain biking areas on public conservation land. There are two designated mountain bike routes - Harataonga Road on the east coast and Forest Road between Port Fitzroy, Whangaparapara on the west coast and Te Ahumata Track between Whangaparapara Rd and Blind Bay Rd.
Intermediate difficulty with some technical sections. Suspension recommended. Some portaging (carrying bike) is required but the new bridge makes this ride very pleasurable. Can get slippery after rain. Ride time: 1.5 to 2 hours
Downhill track starting from Windy Hill at the top. Intermediate to advanced with some steep technical sections. Suspension recommended. Ride time: 45 minutes
Double track Jeep road. Intermediate to advanced difficulty level with great access to the walking tracks and hut at Kaiarara. Ride time: 2 to 4 hours
