Located on the East coast of the island, Kaitoke has a white, sandy surf beach. Activities include surfing, tramping, swimming, hot springs, fishing, golf, beach walking and tennis. The airport is at Claris along with Auckland City Council area office, Civil Defense HQ, Library, Credit Union, shops, Post Office, Garage, LPG filling station, Hire Centre, Chemist, Sports and Social club and more.

Located just north of Awana on the east coast, Harataonga has a white sand beach, great for swimming, fishing and diving. Other activities to do in Harataonga include tramping and visiting historic sites. A campground is within the bay for accommodation.

Located on the northern end of the island, Port FitzRoy is a sheltered west coast harbour, with the white sandy beach Okiwi, to the east. Facilities include an airport at Okiwi and a shop, bottle store, information/travel shop (open during peak season), wharf, dive filling staion, boat launching ramp and DOC office at Port FitzRoy.

Located at the south-western coast of Great Barrier, is the sandy and rocky tidal flats that make Tryphena unique. The passenger ferry docks here making it one of the most popular spots on the island.
